This body of work was inspired by the saki-ori tradition in Japan: when kimono are too old to be worn, weavers tear them into strips and use them as weft for narrow panels, which they then assemble into work clothing, blankets, and other utilitarian items. Where the panels meet, the interaction of the random striping generates enormous visual excitement.
Randomness is central to this body of work. Because the mind creates pattern — no matter how hard we work to defeat the impulse — once I selected the color palette for each piece, I used a random-number generator to determine the order and width of the individual stripes.
